A 2002 Webby Award winner for best activism site.
An online approach to fostering tolerance in society, the Southern Poverty Law Center's Tolerance.org was an ambitious first effort. Over the course of five months, we developed twenty interactive features for parents, teachers, and children to learn and teach tolerance, in addition to a custom content management and publishing system.
Among the features are a database-generated list and map of human rights organizations, a collage consisting of art that children upload to the site, and an interactive version of the Center's Civil Rights Memorial, allowing visitors to connect the people and events of the American civil rights era.
I served as information architect, interaction designer, and 'experience lead' for the project, guiding the work of our writer, visual and audio designers, front-end developers, and usability analysts.
'My sincerest thank you. We have launched a wonderful, powerful,
expandable, meaningful site. I hope you believe, as I do, that the struggle was worth it. We couldn't have done it without you.'
- Jim Carrier, Director, Tolerance.org
Unbelievable. I've been doing this work for years. Still the tears came. Kudos to all!
