This was the week I went from not worrying about AI to worrying about AI. Why?
- Anthropic boss Dario Amodei calls for AI development to slow down.
- OpenAI has repeatedly attacked other sites.
- OpenAI seems to have used user data from a mathematician to compete with him to win a prize, and then behaved very aggressively about it.
- Researchers are hesitant to share their work for fear of AI prematurely solving problems.
- I attended a webinar from a design practitioner in which the comments from people on the front lines gave me the impression that everyone is building a lot of new things, faster than we can sit back and understand the totality of what has been built.
Putting that all together, AI is progressing so fast and we’re building so fast that even the head of Anthropic concedes we might need to slow down, and as proof of this we have OpenAI’s attacks and theft.
We also talk about “AI” as if it’s somehow totally disconnected from us, when it’s us that are building it and creating this situation. It’s not a technology issue, it’s a human issue.
